Thoughts: "Amachi’s Palagaram today is owned and operated by second and third generation family members of their grandmother Amachi's 50 years recipe of Palagram. Amachi, began producing and selling Palagaram in the 70’s as means of supporting the family. Not long after, the art of Palagaram making became a passion that consumed Amachi and her generations to follow." (from restaurant web page). Indian "Palagaram (or Palaharam)" refers to a category of traditional 南印度鹹味和甜味小吃 South Indian savory and sweet snacks, often prepared for offerings to Hindu deities but also enjoyed as between-meal snacks with tea. These foods are diverse, ranging from savory steamed rice-flour dumplings called kolakatta to sweet items like Mysurpa and ladoos, and can include items like vadai, chivda, and more. At the entrance of the Indian Cafe, customers are greeted with Amachi's Palagaram, beautifully packed in glass jars ready for take-away treat.

Moving out from their Kitchen, Amachi's Palagaram opened in USJ11 on the 23rd of April. 2025. The little Indian Cafe is the third-generation tribute to a grandmother's legacy. "Amachi", as she was lovingly called, began selling traditional Indian snacks like murukku and chippi back in the '70s to support her family.
The STAR of the Cafe is "Appam" which the only "Sweet and Savory" meal offering in the Cafe; offering 5 variants. Today's choice is their rm$7 "椰香參巴配蛋阿榜(印度煎薄餅) Egg Appam w/Coconut Sambal", an interesting Appam variant with a 熟蛋或溏心蛋 well-cooked or runny egg seasoned with 黑胡椒和鹽調味 black pepper and salt, sitting on top of a pillowy-soft centre and served with a side 椰香參巴醬 Coconut Sambal. Customer can choose 沙丁魚 Sardine Peratal to pair with the savory appam. The Appam definitely goes with the Cafe's rm$5.90 "瑪薩拉茶 Masala Chai"!
Amachi's Palagaram offers several choices of Appam:
普通阿榜糕奶或椰香參巴 Plain Appam (with coconut milk or coconut sambal) rm$4.50 (sweet or savory)
牛奶阿榜糕 Paal Appam rm$4.50 (sweet milk pancake)
Double Egg Appam with coconut sambal rm$8.50 (savory)
An 阿榜 Appam is a type of 南印度菜中的薄煎餅 thin pancake in South Indian cuisine. It is made with 發酵米糊 fermented rice batter and 椰奶 coconut milk, traditionally cooked in an 小炒鍋 appachatti, a deep pan similar in shape to a wok. It is a popular dish in the 印度喀拉拉邦 Indian states of Kerala and 泰米爾納德邦 Tamil Nadu and in 斯里蘭卡 Sri Lanka. It is likely that Appam came to Malaysia with the migration of the Tamil people to the region, likely in the 15th century, though its exact arrival date is not precisely documented. The dish was influential enough to inspire the creation of Malaysian dishes like roti jala, and it has been a part of the local culinary landscape for a long time, as evidenced by century-old stalls and restaurants in this country.
