Thoughts: Today is testing the 奥林巴斯新镜头测试 m.Zuiko 12-200 with the OMD EM1 at Boeing Photo in SS16 Empire Gallery. (Just a quick note that this is just a record for my own purpose and not a review, and really not qualified anyway).
So, Olympus introduced a new super-zoom with an impressive range of 12-200mm (which is 24-400mm 35mm equivalent), just in March 2019. Last year around November, I have tested the 14-150mm as well as the impressive 12-100mm Pro Lens.
Below is average price differences of the 3 Lenses today are:
m.Zuiko 14-150mm f/4.0-5.6 ii is around rm$2000+
m.Zuiko 12-100mm f/4 Pro is around rm$4600+
m.Zuiko 12-200mm f3.5-6.3 is around rm$3200+
With the impressive range of the new m.Zuiko super-zoom, its really probably a "Do-it-all" travel lens as long as there is enough light and stick to the shutter rules for the long end which is at 1/400s or faster when shooting at the 200mm long end unless one really have super steady hands (I tried it at slower shutter and failed miserably today at the long end).
Some aspects I liked about the 12-200 was that at the wide end of 12mm, it can still focus even very close to the subject (just like the 12-100 lens), maybe just 2 or 3 inches or less. I do think that the 12mm wide end produce the better images compared to the rest of the focal lengths. The lens feels good on the OMD EM1 but maynot so on smaller Olympus cameras, the lens seems solid despite it is "plastic poly"!
A quick comparison of the 3 m.zuiko Lenses of 14-150, 12-100 and 12-200:
35mm equivalent: 28-300, 24-200, 24-400
Dust proof: yes, yes, yes
Splash proof: yes, yes, yes
Closes focusing (wide end): 0.5m, 0.15m, 0.22m
Closes focusing (telephoto end): 0.5m, 0.45m, 0.7m
Build: Plastic Poly, Metal, Plastic Poly
Filter size: 58mm, 72mm, 72mm
Length: 83mm, 116.5mm, 99.7 mm
Diamter: ⌀63.5, ⌀77.5, ⌀77.5
35mm Wide Image Magnification: 0.22x, 0.6x, 0.2x,
35mm Tele Image Magnification: 0.44x, 0.42x, 0.46x,
Image Stabilization: no, yes, no
Maximum Aperture: F4, F4, F3.5
Telephoto Aperture: F5.6, F4, F6.3
Weight: 285g, 561g, 455g
Lens hood: yes, yes, yes
Conclusion: I like the wide end a lot (maybe I think even comparable to my 12-40mm) but as it goes beyond 100mm perhaps a little bit tricky. I seriously doubt can shoot this lens using one hand albeit maybe on the EM1 Mark 2 but definitely the ultimate gear as an All-in-One lens for travel photography!
