Location: Penang near Guan Yin Temple
Subject: Traditional Incense Making
Camera: Nikon D90
Lens: Nikkor 18-105
Thoughts: Mr. Lee Beng Chuan is truly Penang’s living heritage as he is the only remaining traditional joss stick maker in Penang. A now joss sticks are now mostly if not all machine-produced which makes the hand-made joss sticks of Mr. Lee very unique craft.
Walking on the streets of old houses behind Penang's Guan Yin Temple, I found Mr. Lee early in the morning squatting on a low stool writing 挥春 in front of his old shop, which is also his home. Besides making joss sticks as a living, Mr. Lee also produce good chinese character writing for the auspicious coming chinese new year. He was kind enough to allow me to sit at a corner of his "workshop area" outside his house to watch him writing 挥春 and later started the process of making the joss-sticks. It was a wonderful experience with my camera this morning!
