Today's breakfast is the rm$11 "小骨 Small Bones" in a bowl of usual thick Bak Kut Teh soup, version here I think 不是很草药味 are not very herbal and 不太多胡椒味 also not too peppery. But soup is thick and addictive to go with the white rice, satisfied. On a Tuesday public holiday, and at 9am the shop is full house. Parking here isn't difficult around this part of the shop lots in 百家利花園 Berkeley Garden. There are no beverages except Chinese Tea, which customer can either bring their own Chinese Tea leafs or what's offered by the shop. Reservation for a table is available via +6018-791 4119 and with 18 tables which observe reasonably good social distancing. The corner shop lot is just opposite the residential houses, and the shop is also clean and bright. Opposite 永春肉骨茶 is another popular BKT called "亞火三美肉骨茶 Samy & Ah Her Bak Kut Teh". Both shops offering a bowl of Bak Kut Teh at rm$11, a competitive pricing in the Klang area.
永春肉骨茶 Taman Berkeley Eng Chun Bak Kut Teh also offers their 肉骨茶香料包 Bak Kut Teh recipe in pre-package mixed in their shop or via Shopee. Another interesting product is the "ready-made" and 真空包裝 Vacuum packed "椰糖豬腳醋 Instant Gula Melaka Vinegar Pork" at rm$25 per packet. I believe both are available also via GrabFood.
Fun Facts (from its website): 肉骨茶 Bak Kut Teh, is not the combination of Bak Kut Teh and Tea. But rather, it reflects the combination of this Food and Tea-Drinking culture, primarily for breakfast but today it is available all-day-long. In fact, the food that should have been called "肉 Bak" which means flesh/meat and "骨 Kut" which means bone (both a 福建話 Hokkien word), its "茶 Tea" is derived from the name of its founder, 李文地 Li Wendi. Back then, people referred to 李文地 Li Wendi and the flesh and bones he sold collectively as "the flesh and bone land." In 福建話 Hokkien dialect, "地 Di" and "茶 Tea" are 同音 homonymous, and everyone has the habit of drinking tea while eating meat and bones. Over time, the "肉骨地 Flesh and Bone Land" gradually became "肉骨茶 Bak Kut Teh"!
In 巴生 Klang, which is mostly 福建人 Fujianese, the 碗式肉骨茶 bowl-style Bak Kut Teh can be said to be the unique flavor here, but some are also serving as 瓦煲肉骨茶 claypot-style. Diners can order different parts according to their preferences, such as 大骨 Large Bones, 小骨 Small Bones, 腳彎 Bent Feet, 排骨 Ribs, 三層肉 Three-Layered Meat, and so on. Different from the later 瓦煲肉骨茶 Claypot Bak Kut Teh, the soup of the bowl-style 肉熬煮至甘香入味Bak Kut Teh is thicker, and the 湯量不多 amount of soup is not much. The meat is boiled until it is sweet and fragrant, and the soup is dripping with essence!
一碗肉 A bowl of meat, 一盤蔥油飯或白飯 a plate of scallion rice or white rice, 一壺茶 a pot of tea, and nowadays plus 一碗油條 a bowl of Chinese a bowl of "you tiao" or chinese fritter are simple but not fancy, but it is a timeless affair. It is a unique food culture of Klang people especially as morning breakfast where family and friends savoring 巴生人獨有的飲食文化 Bak Kut Teh with a pot of Chinese Tea!
