Thoughts: Carrefour has seized to exist in Malaysia and Singapore for quite some time now. Carrefour, a French suermarket is still strong worldwide; in France it still has over 5000 stores, and still 400+ in Asia (no more in Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand), 4000+ in Europe alone, and nearly 1000 in Latin America; making it a total of 12,000+ stores worldwide! It seems that it is still going strong in Europe since the 1960s. Carrefour still have a strong presence in the Middle Eastern countries today.
But In 2012, Carrefour fully (or in stages) exited its hypermaket businesses in Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand. It was sold to Aeon Group (a Japanese corporate), which is the biggest retailer in Asia. In 2011, all Jusco stores in Malaysia has been fully re-branded as Aeon. While in 2012, Aeon bought all of Carrefour's operations in Malaysia and re-branded the hypermarket as Aeon Big.
For so many years of doing grocery at Carrefour SS16, despite the name change, I still like to refer it as doing grocery at the "old Carrefour"!
It seems that the vegetarian restaurant "Go Go Green" (either renovation or closed) as the location is now covered with while boards and no indications of what's going on. Nearby, at the same floor, the Taiwanese street food kiosk "Shi Lin" also closed shop! Both are at F2 of the building. I don't think the other eateries at F2 are doing well; maybe it is weekdays.
I had lunch today at the 舊街場白咖啡 "Old Town White Coffee" at Ground floor of Aeon Big (interesting the Grocery floor is called Basement area). At Carrefour's time, the "Old Town" location was operated by Subway. The reason why "Old Town's" address is listed as Ground floor because it is actually parallel to the main street (Jalan Kemajuan Subang) at Ground level and the Grocery section is below the Ground floor level (at the Basement level). Subway is still operating at Aeon Big at SS16 but a smaller shop lot away from the main entrance at the Ground Floor.
My lunch at "Old Town" is the Original Nasi Lemak with Hot Soya Milk. In my opinion, both are very nice. I wish the rice is more flavored with coconut milk and more herbs. But the sambal that came with the nasi lemak did saved the dish. In the plate, it was served with a fried egg, boiled egg (half) with the usual nuts, anchovies, and cucumber, plus papadam; 2 types of sambal both mildly spicy which suits me well. Expensive compared to road side stalls but this is a restaruant, and set price comes with a choice of hot or cold beverages; my choice of a hot soya milk goes well to end the slightly spicy nasi lemak.
You can also add-on $1 to $4 for various choices. For $1, I added-on "coffee vanilla ice cream", rather interesting coffee bitterness and ice cream sweetness to end the lunch!
Review: 6 / 10 👍😋
