There are 8 UNESCO World Heritage Sites being awarded in Vietnam and "The Mỹ Sơn Sanctuary" was awarded the honour in 1999. Mỹ Sơn is a cluster of abandoned and ruins of Hindu temples in Vietnam, the structures were mainly constructed between the 4th and the 13th or 14th century AD by the Kings of the 占婆人 Champa people. The temples were built for dedication to the worship of the Hindu God Shiva.
This particular site deep inside the lush jungles not far from the city of 会安 Hoi An is of the most extensive remains of the "Champ People". History recorded that there were maybe once around 70 such temples at this site and only 1/3 of those (around 20) are still standing today. My Son (pronounced ‘me sun’) became a religious centre under King Bhadravarman in the late 4th century, where most of the temples were dedicated to Cham kings associated with divinities, particularly Shiva, who was regarded as the founder and protector of Champa’s dynasties. During the French occupation, the French authorities moved some of the remaining sculptures and artifacts to the Museum of Cham Sculpture in Danang (another tour destination on the 5th day of the tour).
Interestingly Champ people are ethic groups originated from Southeast Asia. Their contemporary population now is concentrated in Kampong Cham Province of Cambodia, some parts of Vietnam including Ho Chi Minh City, Southern Vietnam (not more than 400,000) as well as a small population in Bangkok. It is important to note that the 占婆人 Cham People were once accomplished seafarers, where some 4000 years ago dominated maritime SouthEast Asia. The Cham People were not Muslims then, but around the 8th Century was heavily influenced by Pre-Islamic Indian Culture and Architecture when at that time trade and shipping of India came to be increasingly controlled by Muslims from such regions as Gujarat; and along came with the Muslim religion. And even today, many remaining Cham People still vowed to try to follow the intend of the Muslim Religion as close as possible even though they being a poorer minority group in Indo China.
The Cham people had fought several wars, first defeated by the Khmer King in the 12th Century and later in the 14th Century by the Vietnamese, the Cham-Vietnamese war ended in dismay where over 100,000 Cham people were either captured or killed and from then on, the Cham People were no longer a threat to Vietnam! After the brutal defeat by the Vietnamese, many Cham People fled across the sea to Malay Peninsula and as early as the 15th century, and a Cham colony was established in Malacca. The Chams encountered Sunni Islam there as the Malacca Sultanate was officially Muslim since 1414. The King of Champa then became an ally of the Johor Sultanate; years later, Champa sent its military forces to fight alongside Johor against the Portuguese occupation of Malacca.
