Thoughts: お握り Onigiri (Japanese rice ball) is a comfort food in Japan. This type of food choice can be easily found in all Convenience shops and even Onigiri vending machines across Japan, and unlike Malaysia, the choices are extensive in Japan. It is a popular food as people bring these rice balls to school, for lunch, or as a quick snack any time of the day as it is cheap and easily available. Because of size and packing ,Onigiri are good for a picnic, field trip and school event because they are easy to carry.
And that is why it can be said that Onigiri is the soul food of the Japanese. Mothers and grandmothers at home make these rice balls as creative as they can be for their children or grandchildren with love.In Japan, the price of an Onigiri in Japan can be from 100 to 200 Yen (rm$3.75 - rm$7.50). While 全家 Family Mart Malaysia offers Onigiri with prices from around rm$3.90 to rm$5.50, and 賑香 Shinka stalls offers Onigiri with prices from rm$2.60 to rm3.20.
お握り(おにぎり) Onigiri is also called お結び (おむすび) Omusubi.
"お O" is a Japanese word giving honor to someone or something (which is an Honorific Prefix) like "おかさん" for Mother (for someone) or "お酒" for Alcohol (for something).
"握り(にぎり)" Nigiri" comes from the verb "握る(にぎる) Nigiru", meaning to grasp.
"結び(むすび)" "Musubi" comes from the verb "結ぶ(むすぶ) Musubu", meaning to tie or roll.
The words お握り(おにぎり) Onigiri or お結び (おむすび) Omusubi also express ideas of "Connection" and "Closeness". And, this also has a lot to do with the history of Onigiri itself. The story goes like this, that in the 11th Century, onigiri were called "屯食"(とんじき) Tonjiki and often consumed at "Outdoor picnic lunches", where rice was often rolled into a small ball so that it could be easily picked up for people who gather for social interactions in picnic meetings. In the beginning, Onigiris were initially simply balls of rice flavored with salt. And 紫菜 Nori did not become widely available until the in the 江戸時代 mid-Edo period (17th to 19th Century), when the farming of 紫菜 nori and making it into sheets became widespread. During this period, Onigiris started to be wrapped with Nori, which keeps the rice fresh longer and also easy to be held by the hand for consumption instead of a chopstick.
It is interesting that the rice ball snack have evolved from Rectangular shape and later in the 1980s, the machine that made triangular onigiri was invented. The improvement of automation later added a packaging improvement that allowed the 紫菜 nori to be stored separately from the rice. Before eating, the diner could open the packet of nori and wrap the onigiri; which is now, the usual form of how Onigiri can be bought from Convenience stores (possibly all around the world)!
