Review: The Hakka Yam Abacus seeds, a popular dish among the Hakka dialect.
The Hakka Restaurant has been here since 1956, that's 60 years. 客家算盘子 (Suan Pan Zi) or Hakka Yam Abacus seeds/beads really look like the Chinese Abacus, the main ingredient is the Yam turned into beads, this step alone is no easy task. The accompanying ingredients are leek, pork, mushroom, dried shrimp, garlic and others to stir fry them till fragrant. Put aside and later stir fry again with the cooked beads with lots of pepper on it.
The Hakka Restaurant's beads were perhaps double the size of home-made ones. (small plate $25, medium plate $35, large plate $45). I was happy with it, it was quite filling as my dinner; of course with the beer.
